Familiarity effects on fish behaviour are disrupted in shoals that contain also unfamiliar individuals

چکیده

Abstract Research on several social fishes has revealed that shoals constituted by familiar individuals behave remarkably differently compared to formed unfamiliar individuals. However, whether these behavioural changes may arise also in composed a mixture of and individuals, situation commonly occur nature, is not clear. Here, we observed the behaviour Mediterranean killifish ( Aphanius fasciatus ) were both (i.e. each other pairs) it with entirely made either or Shoals took longer emerge from refuge swam more cohesively fish. behaved as Moreover, mixed did segregate pairs according their familiarity. Quorum Decision-Making in Foraging Fish Shoals

Quorum responses provide a means for group-living animals to integrate and filter disparate social information to produce accurate and coherent group decisions. A quorum response may be defined as a steep increase in the probability of group members performing a given behaviour once a threshold minimum number of their group mates already performing that behaviour is exceeded. In a previous stud...

Effects of Caricaturing in Shape or Color on Familiarity Decisions for Familiar and Unfamiliar Faces

Recent evidence suggests that while reflectance information (including color) may be more diagnostic for familiar face recognition, shape may be more diagnostic for unfamiliar face identity processing. Moreover, event-related potential (ERP) findings suggest an earlier onset for neural processing of facial shape compared to reflectance. In the current study, we aimed to explore specifically the...

Familiarity affects collective motion in shoals of guppies (Poecilia reticulata)

The coordinated and synchronized movement of animals in groups often referred to as collective motion emerges through the interactions between individual animals within the group. Factors which affect these interactions have the potential to shape collective movement. One such factor is familiarity, or the tendency to bias behaviour towards individuals as a result of social recognition. We exam...

Hydrokinetic Turbine Effects on Fish Swimming Behaviour

Hydrokinetic turbines, targeting the kinetic energy of fast-flowing currents, are under development with some turbines already deployed at ocean sites around the world. It remains virtually unknown as to how these technologies affect fish, and rotor collisions have been postulated as a major concern. In this study the effects of a vertical axis hydrokinetic rotor with rotational speeds up to 70...

Context effects on familiarity are familiarity effects of context - an electrophysiological study.

Within dual-process accounts of recognition memory, familiarity (as opposed to recollection) is often referred to as a rather automatic and context-free process. Thus, in episodic object recognition, familiarity and its electrophysiological ERP signature are supposed to index prior occurrence of an object independent of the context the object was originally encountered in, e.g., [Ecker, U.K.H.,...
